Amman
Amman is the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan since 1921. The city is one of the oldest permanent inhabited cities in the world. Nowadays, approximately one third of the population of Jordan reside in the capital.
In Biblical times it was known as Rabbath Ammon and later in Greco-Roman times as Philadelphia. The architectural ruins vary notably in this ancient capital, which like Rome, was originally built on seven hills. Amman's most outstanding monument is the Roman Amphitheatre which was built by Antonius Pius and dates back to the 2nd century A.D. The theatre which once seated 60000 people stands in the city centre of Amman. Another interesting site is the Citadel, a hilltop complex containing Roman, Byzantine and Islamic monuments.
Today, Amman is a busy modern city that combines ancient architecture and heritage with modern sophistication. The capital's refined and international atmosphere is conveyed in the attractively built new and old houses, beautifully designed gardens, the wide selection of local and international fine restaurants, coffee shops, deluxe hotels, shopping malls and old souqs.
