Ajlun

Distance by Road: 25 km west of Jerash, 73 km from Amman.
In the pine hills, towering above the village of Ajlun, stands a famous medieval Arab/Islamic castle "Ajlun Castle" or Qala't al Rabadh. It commands a spectacular view westwards into the Jordan Valley and the land of Gilead. The castle is a living example of medieval Arab/Islamic military architecture. It was built by the Arabs in 1184-85 AD as a defence against the expansionist Crusaders.

The original fortress had four corner towers with arrow slits and a 16 meter wide moat. It was then enlarged in 1214-15 CE by the Mabluk officer Aibak Ibn Abdullah who added a new tower in the southeast corner and built the main one. In 1229, the castle fell to the Emirate of Karak and later was destroyed by the Mongol invaders. The fortress was then conquered and built again by the Mamluk Sultan Baybars.

The well preserved towers and rooms in the castle present a fine example of the Islamic architecture.
