The Dead Sea is located 405 meters below sea level - the lowest water surface on earth. What makes the Dead Sea different and unique is its salinity which is nearly six times that of the ocean, consisting of 23-28 % of salt and other minerals compared with 4-6% in ocean water. The high concentration of salt and minerals - chlorine, bromine, sulfate, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium are found in large quantities which make the waters of the sea lap the beach in oily little waves.

The name 'Dead Sea' was not used until the 2nd century AD when a traveler named Pausanuis passed through the area and noticed that the water is entirely devoid of plant and animal life.

During biblical times, The Sea was called the "Salt Sea", the Sea of Arabah, and the Eastern Sea (Deuteronomy 3: 17; Joshua 3: 16; Numbers 34: 12; Ezekiel 47: 18). It is also believed to be the site of the biblical cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zebouin and Zoar (Gen. 19:13).

The natural rich mud and salt give the waters of the Dead Sea certain curative and beautifying properties.
