The sight is associated with the biblical Mephaath (Mefa’at) mentioned in Joshua 13:18, 21:37 and Jeremiah 48:21. It was inhibited by from around the 7th Century BC until the 9th Century AD.
Excavations have uncovered some of the finest Byzantine church mosaics in the Middle East, including a large carpet depicting Old and New Testament cities on both the east and west banks of the Jordan River. About one and a half kilometer north of Um al Rassas stands a 15 meter high stone Byzantine tower that was used by early Christian monks seeking solitude.
The Tour: Sightseeing will include the beautiful mosaics from the Byzantine period and inscriptions found in the Church of St. Stephen and ruins of at least four Byzantine churches.
